Effects of Ethionine , Methionine , and AOA on the EFE Activities and Polyamine contents of Cut Carnation ¢¥ Desio ¢¥

Abstract
EFE activities and polyamine contents during vase life of cut carnation ¢¥Desio¢¥ which typically produced very low level of ethylene during senescence were investigated to reveal the effect of methionine, ethionine, or AOA applied to the preservative solution. Regardless of treatments, EFE activities during senescence were very low and ethylene evolutions were found to be affected by EFE activities instead of ACC contents. In addition, it was still unclear in cut carnation ¢¥Desio¢¥ whether methionine treated in the preservative solution could inhibit EFE activity or nut. On the other hand, ethionine, an inhibitor of SAM synthetase, was intimately associated with polyamine biosynthesis, resulting in an increase of endogenous putrescine and spermidine contents but a decrease of spermine during senescence. Finally, it has been demonstrated that AOA apparently inhibited the activities of arginine decarboxylase as well as ACC synthase in which both are pyridoxal phosphate linked enzymes on the basis of reduction of endogenous putrescine content in the petals.
